B-GC Poll – Should the Gasoline Tax be raised ?

Published on June 11th, 2009 in Polls

[poll id="2"]

Argument against:

Raising the price of gasoline would put a hardship on people who are already suffering from economic decline. The additional cost for those looking for a job or who have had to take a decline in income recently would be unconscionable.

Argument for:

Raising the price of gasoline by imposing an additional $1 in federal gas tax, would reduce gasoline consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. This high a gas tax would also provide companies a more stable environment for encouraging long term investments in hybrids and other gas saving technologies.

The timing is right to impose this tax, as people have become used to $4/gallon gasoline and the drop from that price has reduced demand for fuel efficient cars.

Raising the price at the pump would reduce global oil demand and have the impact of lowering the price of crude and reducing the cost of deisel and jet fuel, creating a price-lowering driver on many products and services. The tax would generate about $125 B each year.
